If artwork is exposed to water or extreme humidity, the greatest damage usually occurs as it dries. The sooner care is given, the greater the chances of reducing the potential for irreversible damage or total loss.

Art Expressions recommends an annual inspection of artwork in order to maintain its condition. Changes occur slowly and can go unnoticed until they become problematic. The first time you examine your art, you may notice many things you haven not seen before. Very few will need immediate attention, but if you have any questions, don't hesitate to bring your artwork into us for a free inspection.

Examination of your artwork is best done with the work off the Wall and carefully inspected on both the front and backside of the art. Start with he wall hanging system;n check the hardware on the frame and examine the work for signs for age and ware. Then check the wall hangers to make sure they are both in good condition and secure.

When examining art on paper, look to see if the artwork is flat or wavy. Paper is affected by changes in temperature and humidity. Paper may become slightly wavy, which is normal, but severe buckling should be addressed professionally. Do the colors seem dull or cloudy: are they
getting lighter? Is the paper changing color, or is it becoming lighter or darker? Are there brown spots, stains, or unusual discoloration on any part of the artwork? Framing materials (matting and mounting) can change and good maintenance requires periodic replacement. Even the finest quality materials and UV-filtering glazing do not provide unlimited protection.

Works on canvas should also be removed from the wall for inspection. The two most common foundations for paintings are a stretched canvas or a rigid support, such as a wood panel. Both need to be examined. A stretched canvas should be flat or taut, not loose and wavy. A rigid support should be flat, not bowed. The paint surface and colors should be consistent in sheen. The paint should be flat, not cupped, or cracked, and there should not be flaking. The back of the canvas should be clean and free of insects.

When your work is off the wall, it is the perfect time to clean the glazing and dust off the frame and backing. Always clean the glazing while the picture is lying flat. Apply the cleaner onto the rag, not the glass, do not let the cleaning liquid run on the glass or under the frame.

Now that the storms are gone, take action against possible damage to you artwork by inspecting it. If you have any concerns about your art's condition, bring it into Art Expressions for a free inspection!

THE STOOLS ARE BACK!

BAEA STUDIO STOOL FUND RAISER

October's First Friday at Art Expressions will host the preview and kick off for the Brevard Art Educators Association fund raiser. Have and odd-shaped space on your wall you'd like to fill? Need a focal point for your dining room or the finishing touch for your foyer? a mirror could be the answer. a custom-made mirror frame can solve all of these decorating problems - and what's more, it's a practical addition to any room that you'll use for years to come.
Mirrors are easy to find at furniture showrooms or home decor stores. But a custom mirror, crafted by a professional framer, is made to your specifications - not pulled off a rack. You determine the size and shape of the mirror and even the style and color of the moulding.

You can choose a frame that matches any part of your decor: four furniture, your wallcoverings, or even other frames in your home.

Consider your decorating needs. Tall, thin mirrors look great going up a stair case. a large mirror in a formal frame hung above a fireplace is a classic look. Small, square mirrors in wide, decorative mouldings are great accent pieces that work well in almost any room. For a different look, create a frame that displays a small piece of artwork above a decorative mirror.

Solving those difficult design dilemmas might be easier than you think - with a custom-made mirror frame!

Stop into Art Expressions and check out selection of custom framed mirrors...ON SALE NOW at 50% off retail price!
Sale through August 31, 2008.

CLIQLAC

ART EXPRESSIONS invites you to their May FIRST FRIDAY EVENT and opening recetion for Cocoa Beach artist, KERSTIN ZIEGLER. Low humidity, cooler temperatures, and just a slight breeze.

In preparation for the event, both the featured artist and myself worked on transforming the gallery by changing the color from the bold red it has been for 2 years to a metallic turquoise in the front window and main gallery and a nice toasty brown in the recessive areas which sets the turquoise off nicely!

Attendees who turned out enjoyed light refreshments and chatting with Suzanne. The gallery was abuzz with uwwws and ahhhhs over Clement's most recent creations, her new found passion TTV (through the viewfinder) photography, which received kudos from all her devotees as well as newcomers!

In addition to the Suzanne Clements opening at Art Expressions, Highland avenue was bustling with other activity including the grand opening of Fritz Van Eden's gallery, and Jazz Friday in the Eau Gallie Square! We do look forward to seeing you for the next First Friday happening on December 7th!

"SHIFT"

I am so pleased to announce to you Art Expression's featured artist for November will be Suzanne Clements. Known as a figurative painter for the past ten years, Suzanne will unveil something entirely different! This latest exhibition, titled "SHIFT" will contailn only a handful of her latest paintings. Instead, her focus has moved to a new medium.

Last winter marked a change in Suzanne's creative process. After purchasing her first home and finally carving out a decent studio space (no longer confined to the tiny dining nook of her former apartment) she found that she was struggling to paint.

"Looking back at the work I completed in 2006 I knew I wnated to take an intirely new direction, but for the life of me couldn't decide which way to go." Suzanne created two completely different pieces, darker, more mysterious, and fo rthe first time, her portrait was obscured. "Iloved the new direction, they function as a perfect bookent to my painting. Even if it's just for now."

Suzanne has long used photograpphy as a part of her painting process, and for the first time she has begun experimenting with making is the focal point of her artwork. Much like her paintings, the photography whe creates still holds a sense of the surreal and inaginary. She captures her images by way fo an antique camera lending visual distortion and noise to her final compositions.

"SHIFT" will open on Friday, November 2, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. On exhibit will be her final never before seen paintings and collection fo new photography work. Join the artist for light refreshments and conversation.

Students of the Unusual: Comic Book Event a Huge sucess!

It was a SMASH! From the pop corn machine, to the featured artists, to the music! Art Expressions was hopping! The comic book illustrators and vendors were very busy selling their wares, autographing, and sketching.

On hand for the Event were Terry Cronin and Pat Martin from Students of the Unusual, Miss Kika; aka Liz Lorini, Rob Granita of DC Comics, Jules Rivera from Marsh Rocket, and Famous Funnies and Faces of Melbourne! Also on display was an array of mixed media works by favorite local artist, David Burton.

Those who attended this wonderfully fun and exciting event, enjoyed chatting with the artists while viewing their work. They also munched fresh popped popcorn and sipped refreshments, reveling among other art enthusiasts taking in the ambiance of a quaint downtown Eau Gallie evening!

At Art Expressions, no job is too small!

Check out this canvas we stretched for one of our clients! Blue water, abundant wildlife, tropical foliage......This truly is paradise! Immediatley you're drawn into the center of it all by a vintage map, illustrated by hand, that confirms you are no longer in the 21st century. However, just on the horizon, a sailing ship is making its way toward the shore! Tolan to their gallery as their featured artist for October. Born in Valcea, Romania and now a resident of Brevard County, Tolan's work will be on exhibit through October.

"It all started with a simple look through a painting studio, a glance around the room fascinated me: the skeleton, the model, an animal skull!....Despite the general idea that bones are connected with death, decay and usually something unpleasant, I personally discovered a particular beauty in their intricacy and organic aspect of the forms. In my works bones represent history--history of our existence and our creation as beings. Therefore, my works tend to venture into what is "beyond the flesh", beyond this visible world."

Tolan has studied with graphic artist Matei Serban and at the Luceafarul Art Academy in Bucharest.
